Chelly No 18

Chelly No 18, originally uploaded by adolfo_isassi.

How can you know if you got a shot that is as good as it gets?

This was my second time around in Canyon the Chelly. The first time was back in 2006. I took some of my best landscape photographs back in those 2006 sessions in this location. Those images are still staking high, even though I am a better photographer now.

Here is a the same take back in 2006.

Spider Rock No 88

Four years later...and I gravitated to the same exact spot almost by inches. It is, I think....the optimal composition for this subject. Now, I know that back in 2006, I got it as good as it gets.

The composition is so very close! The newer image has more punch to it so I wonder better post processing or better light?

Hi Keith,
Yeah, I noticed that.
I think that the main factor is different light. The one taken in 2006, was taken under a very warm semi-cloudy sky sunset light. This last one, was taken under open sky and a bit past sunset.

But there are other factors.
The 2006 image was taken with a Canon 20D and processed with PhaseOne software. The 2010 image with a Canon 5D and processed with Adobe Lightroom.

Also, this time around, I put more attention to get the color of different sandstone colors around the Southwest right.

The sandstone in this canyon it is definitely towards the red hue. I have noticed that cameras tend to render a more orange hue, so a slight correction is in order. Experimenting with the camera profiles under Lightroom confirms these perceptions. Natural and Faithful rendering profiles get you closer to the original sandstone colors.
